Chiengora is the term used for spinning fiber or yarn made from dog hair or dog hair blend. While some think of using dog hair as something icky, others know that fiber from a healthly, well cared for dog can rival the finest angora. And just like wool doesn’t smell like sheep, properly washed chiengora does not smell like dogs.
If you have read the ‘About’ page, you already know that spinning dog hair is how I got started with spinning. I do this only for myself now and have passed my spinning business on to someone else who is a natural born spinner, but I do teach others how to do this themselves and sometimes do demos.
I’ll be posting photos and tips on how to harvest, store and process your pet hair to make wonderful items. Check back soon!
I just posted an article on chiengora on my blog http://Seabreezespinners.com/ featuring my “mostly” border collie, Lacy. I’m self taught and not a fiber artist but I’m having fun. Lots of photos. Please come visit.
